Join us on Saturday 5th September 2026 for "Go with the flow...", our in-person event all about Gloucestershire's local rivers and freshwater. The event will see talks, a film by local students and a document display about our rivers, and of course free refreshments.

What will happen on the day?

  • Three live talks of the day: at 12:30, 13:30 and at 15:00
  • Exhibition of river scenes influenced by the poetry of Ivor Gurney, painted by Stan Giles, local artist
  • An exhibition and film by local students using archive sources relating to rivers held at Gloucestershire Archives with some original documents also on display
  • Meet representatives from the Stroudwater Navigation Archive Charity; the Stroudwater Textile Trust, the Cotswold Canal Trust, the Severn Vale Catchment Partnership, the Gloucester & District Model Boat ClubMuseum in the Park & more
  • Water based activities and demonstrations available all day – suitable for all ages
  • Refreshments throughout the day, donations welcome
  • Fishermen or stowaways? Discover your personal heritage with the Gloucestershire Family History Resource Centre, open from 10am. 

Talks and film show of the day

  • 12.30pm  Severn Vale Catchment Partnership discuss some of the successes of a catchment-based approach to river conservation and answer questions on the state of our local rivers 

  • 1.30pm – A medley of 10-minute talks on The Ports of the tidal River Severn (Martin Bryan); the effects of the River Thames on canal traffic (Lois Francis); Stroudwater canal trade during the Napoleonic War, 1804-1815 (Sam Benson); Harnessing power through history (Jane Ford of the Stroudwater Textile Trust) 

  • 3pm  Talk based on the podcast ‘River Journey – The Bristol Frome’ by Christina Wheeler
