Death is everywhere – at Pemberley (P D James), in the clouds (Agatha Christie), in the tunnel (M Burton), in the family (Batman)…. and we won’t even mention Bambi, Dumbo and the Lion King! But what is less well known is that – like a good crime novel, death lurks unseen in every archive – in parish registers, coroners' inquests, wills and inventories, newspapers, churchyard plans, diaries, memorial inscriptions, insect traps, police files and military records. Although proclaimed by Shakespeare in Hamlet, Act III, Scene I as “The undiscovered country, from whose bourn. No traveller returns.” we – rather like Captain Kirk and Chancellor Gorkon in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country – hope only to allude to death in this presentation by looking at what records regarding death can be found. Memento mori!
